Volvo Cars has launched a new sound feature, Abbey Road Studios Mode, in its EX90 cars. The technology is designed to recreate the acoustics of the iconic London recording studio.
The feature will be available for all EX90 models fitted with the optional Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity Audio system. It will arrive free of charge via an over-the-air update in the coming weeks.
The mode was developed by Bowers & Wilkins in collaboration with Abbey Road Studios. It is inspired by the studio’s unique acoustic spaces and the sound signature of the equipment used by famous artists over decades, delivering a distinctive listening experience inside the EX90.
Abbey Road Studios Mode offers several presets for different listening styles. Drivers can also explore Producer Mode, which allows them to adjust the sound, change the stereo field, or shift the acoustic environment from retro to modern, similar to what producers do in the studio.
"The Abbey Road Studios Mode brings the unique sound of our spaces and equipment to the Bowers & Wilkins system in the Volvo EX90 for the first time. Drivers can shape and personalise the sound in the car for an unparalleled listening experience. We are hugely proud of this collaboration." said Jeremy Huffelmann, general manager at Abbey Road Studios.
The over-the-air update is part of Volvo’s effort to continually improve its software-defined cars. New EX90 and ES90 models with the Bowers & Wilkins audio system will include the Abbey Road Studios Mode from the factory.
"We use technology to improve everyday life for our drivers, so we’re excited to offer the Abbey Road Studios Mode in the Volvo EX90. This world-first experience shows how we add value through simple over-the-air updates." said Anders Bell, chief engineering and technology officer at Volvo Cars.
The EX90 has one of the quietest cabins Volvo has ever made. With 25 strategically placed speakers, the Bowers & Wilkins system delivers Dolby Atmos sound. Engineers from both Volvo and Bowers & Wilkins worked closely to tune the system for optimal performance.
Volvo Cars has recently upgraded its technology to deliver updates over-the-air to around 2.5 million existing vehicles built since 2020, across 85 countries. This allows owners to receive improvements without visiting a Volvo retailer.
The new feature highlights Volvo’s focus on combining luxury, technology, and convenience. Abbey Road Studios Mode is the latest example of how the Swedish carmaker continues to enhance the in-car experience for its drivers.
