Celebrating an Icon of Screen and Style: The Volvo P1800

Adding a timeless touch of nostalgia to the launch of our new TMS Volvo Leicester dealership, we proudly showcased the world-famous Volvo P1800, famously driven by Roger Moore as Simon Templar in the classic 1960s TV series The Saint. This stunningly restored vehicle, owned by Kevin Price from the Volvo Enthusiasts Club, remains a symbol of automotive heritage and cinematic history.

A Car Born to Be a Star

The journey of the Volvo P1800 into The Saint’s limelight began in 1962. With the launch of the series looming, Jaguar declined to provide an E-Type for Simon Templar’s vehicle due to high demand. Roger Moore himself suggested the newly launched Volvo P1800, and within a week, a white P1800 registered as 71 DXC was delivered. This car, bearing the iconic "ST 1" number plate during filming, became a symbol of Templar’s suave, crime-fighting persona.

The P1800 made its debut in the opening episode, The Talented Husband, where it accompanied Simon Templar across international escapades, from Germany to the Bahamas. In reality, the car never left Britain’s shores—clever camera tricks transported it to exotic locations.

Restoration of a Legend

After its retirement from The Saint, 71 DXC faced decades of neglect. It was rediscovered in 1991 by Kevin Price, member of the Volvo Enthusiasts Club, in a derelict state on a North Wales farm. The once-glamorous car was found covered in brambles and nettles, with its engine sitting on the back seat. Despite this, the car's core structure was surprisingly intact.

Kevin embarked on a passionate, multi-year restoration project, spending a decade sourcing parts and another six years meticulously rebuilding the car. The process involved extensive rust removal, a complete body shell reconstruction, and updates to the gearbox, rear axle, and engine—including a conversion for unleaded fuel. Wherever possible, original components were retained to preserve the car's authenticity.

When the restoration was finally completed, 71 DXC made its triumphant return to the road. Its debut at the Footman James Manchester Classic Car Show marked the first public display of the fully restored vehicle, delighting fans of The Saint and classic cars alike.

A Timeless Classic

Roger Moore once expressed his fondness for the P1800, saying, “I have a great affection for the Volvo P1800, as, of course, I owned one as well as used one in the series. It’s a beautiful car.” Moore’s connection to the P1800 predated his iconic role as James Bond, and it remains a vital part of his legacy as a suave, stylish leading man. Although Sir Roger passed away in 2017 after a short but brave battle with cancer, his appreciation for the Volvo P1800 continues to inspire enthusiasts and fans of The Saint.
