Volvo Cars is expanding its 2026 production to meet strong EX60 demand
By John Isgar | 4th March 2026
Volvo Cars is increasing 2026 production volumes for its fully electric EX60 SUV, on the back of strong customer demand for the car in its home market of Sweden and other key markets such as Germany.
Barely a month after the car’s public reveal, nearly all major European markets are reporting retail orders considerably higher than internal forecasts.
This includes over 3,000 orders in Sweden alone, helped by a new Care offer designed for simplicity, transparency and precision, as well as the inclusion of three years of free home charging.
The pace of the order intake is also significantly higher than it was for the EX30 small SUV after its global reveal in 2023, a car in a high-volume segment with a lower price point.
What makes the order intake particularly noteworthy is that so far, order books are only open in European markets. US order books for the EX60 will open later this spring.
While Volvo Cars will prioritise a steady and prudent ramp-up of EX60 production that aims to secure high quality production, it is now planning an increase in production of the EX60 at its Torslanda plant in Sweden.
Volvo Cars is currently engaged in a dialogue with relevant labour unions, with the aim of keeping the Torslanda open for one extra week in the summer, which would be the first time in the company’s history.
“That so many customers ordered the EX60 in the first month has surpassed our expectations, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have,” says Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars.
“We are very encouraged to see such strong demand for our game-changing electric SUV, and we are now reviewing our production plans for 2026, as we gear up for the start of customer car production next month.”
The EX60, revealed to almost universal acclaim at the end of January, is designed to be a game changer for Volvo Cars and its customers. It delivers class-leading range, charges as fast as a regular stop for coffee and fuel, and is priced in line with the company’s best-selling XC60 plug-in hybrid.
The Volvo EX60 is now available to order at all TMS Volvo Retailers.
