Posted 10 March 2025

Following the success of our Volvo EX90 showcase, we returned to the breathtaking grounds of Coombe Abbey in Coventry, this time with the new Volvo XC90.

With its historic architecture and scenic parklands, Coombe Abbey provides the perfect backdrop for us to explain the updates and new styling elements of Volvo's latest luxury 7-seater SUV.

The Best Volvo XC90 Yet

The new Volvo XC90 builds on its legacy as one of the safest and most luxurious SUVs on the road. With a refreshed exterior and redesigned interior, the latest XC90 offers a more premium and contemporary look while maintaining its unmistakable Scandinavian elegance.

One of the most noticeable changes is the new front grille, featuring a more refined pattern that enhances the SUV’s bold and confident presence. The updated bumper design further complements its sleek profile, while newly designed LED headlights with Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights provide improved visibility and a striking aesthetic. At the rear, subtle refinements to the taillights and bumper styling contribute to a more sophisticated and modern overall appearance.

Inside, the XC90 now offers an even more premium feel, featuring a larger central touchscreen with higher resolution, improved infotainment, and over-the-air software updates for a seamless and future-ready driving experience.

Inside, comfort remains paramount. The new model features enhanced seating, improved suspension, and added insulation for a quieter, more refined ride. The optional air suspension system further enhances driving dynamics, adjusting for aerodynamics at high speeds or raising the vehicle for off-road adventures.

Innovation Meets Timeless Design

From the outside, the XC90’s modernised design reflects Volvo’s commitment to electrification while staying true to its iconic form. A new, more contemporary exterior reinforces the SUV’s confident stance, echoing elements from Volvo’s latest fully electric models. This evolution aligns with the brand’s ongoing transition towards full electrification, ensuring that the XC90 remains at the forefront of premium SUV design.

Yet, arguably, the biggest transformation comes inside. The refreshed interior blends Scandinavian craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, designed to enhance both practicality and luxury.

The cabin now features a more horizontal dashboard layout, seamlessly integrating decorative panels made from premium recycled materials. These sustainable elements, combined with new vertical air vents and enhanced ambient illumination, create an elegant and contemporary atmosphere, particularly at night.

A Balanced Approach to Electrification

As Volvo continues its journey towards full electrification, the plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 remains a key part of the lineup. Alongside fully electric models like the EX90, it provides customers with the flexibility to transition towards a more sustainable future at their own pace.

This balanced approach recognises that while the demand for fully electric vehicles is growing, plug-in hybrids still play a crucial role in bridging the gap. With an all-electric range of more than 70 kilometres (approximately 43 miles), many XC90 T8 drivers can complete their daily journeys with zero tailpipe emissions. Meanwhile, the combination of electric and petrol power extends the total driving range to over 800 kilometres (around 497 miles), offering the confidence and convenience needed for longer trips.

Volvo's plug-in hybrids are already making a significant impact. Data shows that around half of the total distance covered by the latest plug-in hybrid Volvo models is driven using pure electric power. This underlines the XC90 T8’s ability to deliver tangible emissions reductions while reassuring customers of a petrol engine for added flexibility.

In addition to the T8 plug-in hybrid, Volvo also offers two mild-hybrid petrol variants, the B5 and B6. These models use a 48V lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter generator to improve efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15% in real-world driving conditions.

By maintaining a diverse powertrain portfolio, Volvo ensures that customers can choose the right vehicle for their needs, whether that’s a fully electric SUV or a plug-in hybrid with the best of both worlds. The XC90 T8 stands as a testament to this strategy, combining sustainability with the legendary versatility, comfort, and safety that Volvo is known for.

A Stunning Backdrop: The Beauty of Coombe Abbey

Set within 500 acres of breathtaking Warwickshire countryside, Coombe Abbey provides a truly spectacular setting for the new Volvo XC90. With its mix of historic architecture, landscaped gardens, and tranquil lakes, the park is an idyllic location that perfectly complements the XC90’s refined Scandinavian design.

The estate’s picturesque landscape owes much to the visionary work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, one of Britain’s most influential landscape designers. Between 1771 and 1776, Brown was commissioned by the 6th Baron Craven to transform the formal Elizabethan gardens into a more naturalistic parkland.

His work introduced sweeping lawns, rolling grasslands, and carefully curated woodlands to frame breathtaking views. Most notably, Brown dammed the Smite Brook to create the elegant Coombe Pool, a serpentine lake that stretches west from the Abbey buildings, seamlessly blending nature with design.

Lakeside Walks offer visitors the opportunity to experience Brown’s masterful landscaping up close, with serene waterside trails winding through the grounds. Whether you are exploring on foot or pausing to take in the stunning scenery, the area exudes tranquillity and sophistication.

Further into the estate, the Old Deer Park provides panoramic views of Coombe Abbey and its vast green spaces. This historic area offers insight into early restoration efforts and showcases Brown’s commitment to preserving and enhancing natural beauty. The carefully curated parkland provides the perfect backdrop for showcasing a luxury SUV like the XC90, with its seamless blend of tradition and modernity.

For those looking to experience even more of Coombe Abbey’s charm, the park’s extensive woodlands, walking trails, and abundant wildlife create an immersive escape into nature. Whether admiring the majestic heronry or strolling beneath centuries-old trees, Coombe Abbey remains one of the most picturesque and historically rich locations in the region.
