The fully electric Volvo EX90 has been awarded the highest possible safety rating after completing the latest round of Euro NCAP testing.
The seven-seat family SUV earned a five-star result from Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading independent car safety assessment programme. The rating places the EX90 among the highest-performing vehicles tested this year.
Euro NCAP examined the EX90 across several key areas, including adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety technology. The SUV performed strongly throughout, continuing Volvo’s long-standing reputation for prioritising real-world safety.
Volvo Cars says the EX90 builds on more than five decades of crash research. Data from more than 50,000 real-life accidents involving over 80,000 people has shaped the company’s approach to developing safety innovations. This knowledge feeds into the Volvo Cars Safety Standard, an internal benchmark that goes beyond official testing requirements.
Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said the result reflects the company’s commitment to designing cars for everyday road situations. She explained that the EX90 combines insights from both physical and virtual crash testing with advanced sensor technology to help protect people inside and outside the car.
The EX90 uses Volvo’s Safe Space Technology, a collection of systems working together to understand the environment around the car. Using cameras, radars and other high-tech sensors, the vehicle can identify risks and support the driver in avoiding or reducing the severity of collisions.
In the event of an accident, the EX90 relies on a strong body structure and advanced restraint systems designed specifically for this model. These features are intended to offer high levels of protection for all occupants.
A standout feature of the EX90 is its driver understanding system. Also offered on the ES90, this technology was recognised as one of TIME’s Best Inventions in 2024. It monitors the driver’s condition in real time and can provide support if they appear tired, distracted or unable to maintain full control.
The SUV also includes full-cabin occupant sensing. Using sensitive radar, the system can detect tiny movements, such as a baby breathing, helping prevent the risk of accidentally leaving someone inside the vehicle.
The five-star rating adds to a growing list of awards for the EX90, including the World Luxury Car title earlier this year. As the model continues to roll out across Europe, drivers in Leicester, Hinckley, Coventry and the wider Midlands gain another high-safety electric SUV option for family and long-distance travel.
