Volvo has reached a major milestone in its electrification journey, delivering its one millionth plug-in hybrid in September 2025.
The achievement marks another important step in the brand’s transition towards becoming a fully electric car maker.
Plug-in hybrids remain a key part of Volvo’s line-up today, offering drivers a smooth blend of electric driving and traditional power. In the first half of 2025, Plug-in Hybrids accounted for 23% of Volvo’s global sales. Popular models like the Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90 have been especially strong performers, with the XC60 ranking as Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2024 and leading its segment worldwide for the past three years.
“Our plug-in hybrid cars are a crucial bridge towards that future for those customers who are not yet ready to go fully electric,” explains Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars. He highlighted that Volvo will continue to update and refresh its Plug-in Hybrid range while also expanding its growing line-up of fully electric models.
Volvo’s own data shows that drivers are already embracing electric driving habits. On average, owners of Volvo plug-in hybrids spend around half their driving time in pure electric mode, particularly in urban environments.
Volvo has been a pioneer in plug-in technology since 2012, when it introduced the V60 diesel hybrid – the world’s first diesel plug-in. For several years, it was the only global car maker to offer a Plug-in Hybrid version of every model in its line-up.
Today, Volvo offers plug-in hybrid variants across a range of models, alongside their fully electric cars such as the Volvo EX30, Volvo EX90, and forthcoming Volvo EX60. This balanced portfolio gives drivers the choice of premium electrified cars that suit every lifestyle.
