If you are considering switching to an electric vehicle, you may have heard of the term 'range anxiety'.

For most drivers that are exploring electric cars for the first time, the idea of running out of battery before reaching a charging point can feel quite daunting. It's actually one of the most common concerns, especially if you are used to the convenience of traditional fuel stations.

So, what exactly is range anxiety, and how can drivers overcome it?

What is range anxiety?

Range anxiety refers to the worry that an electric vehicle may not have enough battery charge to reach its desired destination or the next available charging point. This concern was more common in the early days of electric vehicles when battery ranges were lower and public charging infrastructure was limited.

However, today most modern electric cars can comfortably travel 200-300 miles on a single charge, which covers the majority of everyday needs.

Why range anxiety happens

Even with improved electric vehicle technology, the concern can still arise for a few understandable reasons. Drivers may simply be unfamilar with how electric cars work. Others may not yet realise how widely available charging points have become across the UK. Here are some common reasons why people experience range anxiety:

  • Uncertainty about how far electric vehicle can travel on a single charge
  • Not knowing where nearby charging points are located
  • Concerns about charging times on longer journeys
  • Comparing EV charging to the speed of refuelling a petrol or diesel car

Once drivers spend time with an electric vehicle, these concerns usually disappear quickly as they become a lot more familiar with the technology.

How far can electric cars travel?

Battery range has significantly improved over the past decade. In fact, many modern electric vehicles now offer ranges well above 200 miles, while some models can exceed 300 miles depending on driving conditions.

However, like petrol and diesel, there are several factors that can influence how far an electric vehicle can travel such as:

  • Driving style
  • Motorway speeds
  • Outside temperature
  • Use of heating or air conditioning

The growth of EV charging infrastructure

One of the biggest changes helping reduce range anxiety is the rapid expansion of the UK's charging network. Public charging points are now widely available at locations including; Supermarkets, service stations, shopping centres, car parks and places of work.

Rapid chargers located on major road networks can often charge a battery to around 80% in under an hour, making longer journeys far more practical than many people expect. Also, a lot of electric vehicle owners also choose to install a home charger which allows them
to start each day with a full battery.

Practical ways to overcome range anxiety

For drivers new to electric vehicles, a few simple habits can make a big difference in building confidence.

Planning longer trips in advance so you know where your charging point are located along the route, many navigation systems and mobile apps now show real-time charging locations.

Charging little and often can also help. Topping up the battery during everyday activities such as shopping or going to the gym quickly becomes part of the routine.

Conclusion

Range anxiety is a common concern for drivers considering an electric vehicle, but it's largely based on outdated perceptions. With modern EV's offering a stronger battery range, the UK's continued network growth and home charging making daily driving simple and convenient. There really isn't much to worry about when it comes to driving range and for most, switching to electric quickly becomes second nature.
